A Horseman Comes to the Studio

As preparations begin for the upcoming “Launch Josh to Berkeley” open studio sale in June, one new piece has already found a home.
While I was hanging posters around the garage and getting the studio ready, a neighbor stopped by to say hello. She mentioned that she would soon be leaving for the summer to spend time at her house in the Hamptons and would likely miss the sale itself.
As we were talking, she noticed a piece I had just finished that day sitting directly in front of her.
The work is a collage with oil pastel: a strange horse figure, half draped in a caparison, the rest of his human body stylishly dressed somewhere between theater, dream, and psychological portraiture.
She asked whether the piece was available.
It was.
By the end of the conversation, it was wrapped and on its way to be framed and hung in the Hamptons.
One of the pleasures of opening a studio is witnessing the unexpected ways artwork finds its people — the conversations, coincidences, and quiet stories that begin even before the official doors open.
The “Launch Josh to Berkeley” open studio sale will take place June 13–14 and will include original paintings, drawings, studio discoveries, unframed works starting at $150, and a few surprises from Chris Towle.
